What are nanofibers? Nanofibers are just what they sound like- really small fibers. “Nano” is a unit prefix that means “one billionth.” So a nanometer is one one billionth of a meter. Nanofibers are traditionally defined as having a diameter less than 1000 nm and a length no less than 50 times its width. There aren’t any official qualifications, but if it’s a fiber so small that measuring its diameter necessitates the use of nanometers, it’s probably a nanofiber!

Why do nanofibers matter? Because of their size, nanofibers have special properties that make them useful for solving high-value problems. Many of these problems are related to next-generation technologies, just beyond the horizon of current capabilities. Nanofibers are the enabling factor!
